Inspiration
Veganism is a growing trend in the United States and worldwide. Notable, most vegan websites and skills focus on education and animal advocacy. We wanted to create an Amazon Alexa Skill which focused on fun, with a bit of education as an afterthought.
What it does
The Vegan Trivia, Amazon Alexa Skill can allow up to 4 players to play a turn based trivia game, all while keeping score. It allows for unique player nicknames and session tracking, allowing users to pick the game back up at another time.
How I built it
Using the Amazon Skill kit, this app was created in Javascript.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into challenges with understanding all of the potential user voice commands, planning against many potential variables such as "Yes", "Sure", "Ok", "uh huh" etc proved challenging.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We worked with 9 vegans to get what we believe to be the funnest list of vegan trivia out there. We test this app on 30 users, both vegan and non-vegan to get an understanding if it was easy to use and most importantly, if it was fun.
What I learned
We learned quite a bit. As this was our first Amazon Alexa Skill, there were quite a few barriers to break through, from hosting, using the language, approval process and more. I highly recommend Amazon Alexa Skills as a learning project for junior and mid-level developers.
What's next for Vegan Trivia Alexa Skill
We're working to better integrate the skill with our website and considering implementing a premium version, with more questions and features.
