Inspiration

Our inspiration for EduBuddy came from the statistics showing that in many developing countries, less than 40% of students complete their upper secondary education. We realized that a significant barrier is the lack of access to quality education and personalized support. We saw an opportunity to use AI to create a tool that not only supports homeschooling efforts but also makes education more accessible, engaging, and personalized.

What it does

Our inspiration for EduBuddy came from the stark statistics showing that in many developing countries, less than 40% of students complete their upper secondary education. We realized that a significant barrier is the lack of access to quality education and personalized support. We saw an opportunity to use AI to create a tool that not only supports homeschooling efforts but also makes education more accessible, engaging, and personalized.

How we built it

First, we created a design using Figma. We crafted EduBuddy's front-end interface with React, creating a seamless and responsive user experience. To ensure the information provided by EduBuddy is accurate, we integrated Wolfram Alpha's API for factual verification. To support our infrastructure and handle the backend processes, we used AWS services. We also usedTinyMCE to handle student's homework submissions.

The AI capabilities of EduBuddy are powered by Claude2. This AI model handles various tasks such as understanding user inquiries, generating educational content, and offering real-time assistance with homework.

Challenges we ran into:

Integrating the front-end with the back-end. Ran into difficulties with creating the Flask endpoint

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Fully working AI assistant which is flexible and equipped with multiple prompts to handle a variety of educational-themed requests. Also integrating Wolfram API to use as a cross-referencing source for the LLM to reduce hallucination and improve accuracy.

What we learned

Interdependence in technology. Each team member stepped out of their comfort zone, tackling tasks with technologies new to them.

What's next for Vassar changing the world

The next steps involve:

  • Data-Driven Improvements: Utilizing user data to continually refine and personalize the learning experience.
  • Community Building: Fostering a community where homeschoolers can share resources, advice, and support.
  • Language Support: Implementing multi-language support to make EduBuddy accessible worldwide. Advanced AI Interaction: Upgrading our AI to handle more complex student queries and learning patterns.
