Free Response “Impromptu” is a social media platform that mobilizes users to creatively express themselves by providing weekly prompts meant to spark inspiration and generate unique artistic interpretations from users. These creative expressions are not limited to a single medium—users can choose to interpret the prompt and share their personal narratives with any art form: visual art, performance art, music, coding, engineering, architecture, etcetera. Because “Impromptu” is inclusive of all mediums, even creators in professional sectors who wouldn’t normally consider themselves artists are included in our call to create. Our app aims to celebrate marginalized voices by spotlighting creations from underrepresented communities and countries around the world for all users to see. By developing a global network where artists can connect and engage with each others’ work, “Impromptu” brings together creatives of different skill levels and provides a space for them to exchange constructive criticism, skills, advice, and praise. Artists can gain confidence, improve their craft, and find like-minded individuals through shared creative interests.
Impromptu’s main feature is its weekly creative prompts. Each week, all users are given one main prompt to respond to with a creation of their choice. The prompt is provided to spark users’ inspiration. However, users are prevented from viewing others’ responses until they have answered the prompt themselves to encourage them to remain authentic to their own creative expressions and identities. In addition to the app-generated prompts, users are able to submit their own prompts to further boost their voices. Impromptu is compatible with any art medium or file upload type, giving its users endless opportunities to create and share through storytelling. Impromptu’s other key feature is its creator spotlight—a feature that hand selects the most liked creation from three random countries that week and exhibits them to all users, which empowers underrepresented voices. On the spotlight page, users are also able to apply to be featured as artists of the week, which uplifts their voices and allows their creative identities to be showcased. After a user uploads their submissions, other users are able to like and leave constructive comments or feedback on their creations.
