Inspiration

We were inspired by personal experience training through periods and managing period care in the backcountry, as well as the book "Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World" by Lauren Fleshman. Period care is often overlooked in sport and outdoor adventuring and people with periods often stop training or the extra pain they go through while they are on their period is not acknowledged, which can decrease wellness. We wanted to break this stigma and increase wellness for people on their period by introducing The Arct'eryx 28 Project - appropriately named based on the average length of a menstrual cycle.

What it does

The 28 Project is a landing page on the Arc'teryx website which aims to increase wellness by keeping people empowered, outside, and physically active while on their periods. There are 3 components to this project.

  1. A clothing filter that increases e-commerce by recommending clothing by menstrual cycle stage.
  2. An interactive map that increases user engagement by recommending local hikes based on menstrual cycle stage.
  3. A community events page cement an omnichannel approach to breaking the stigma around periods, drawing people into Arc'teryx stores, and connecting gender minorities in outdoor activity with each other.

How we built it

We built it through a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and integrative approach. We first prototyped the website using Figma to explore user flow and design. We then used CSS, Javascript, and HTML to code the website into a useable interface. We also used Leaflet, D3, and excel to create an interactive map.

Challenges we ran into

We found it challenging to integrate all the aspects of the project across team members and between languages, but we worked through the challenges to end up with a super cool finished product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are super proud of our idea because we think it will be very impactful for people who are often underrepresented in sport. We're also really proud about our technical product - it is more sophisticated than we could have imagined making in 24 hours :)

What we learned

We're really proud about how much we learned about women in sport and adventuring and how we can make a company initiative that addresses inequality in the outdoor industry. We also each learned a new skill or became more efficient in an existing one - from Figma and HTML, to Leaflet and R!

What's next for The Arc'teryx 28 Project

The Arc'teryx 28 Project is highly scalable and has the potential to be scalable across all Arc'teryx channels. The website landing page can be launched on all online sites, mobile apps, and community events can be held across the world. We think this could also be a launch point for Arc'teryx to introduce swimwear or underwear that supports period care in the backcountry.
