Inspiration

My project is inspired by an installation art piece on our campus. “The Alumni Family Tree”. It symbolizes RP’s growing alumni family – a family firmly rooted in the values of RP, branching outwards to new challenges and aspirations. Every leaf represents a cohort of graduates embodying the moral values and strong affiliation forged during their time of learning, friendship and life in RP.

What it does

Seeking to make this art piece accessible to everyone, I recreated a digital version. The digital inspiration of the installation can be viewed from all angles as well as from different floors, especially striking when observed from the stairs leading to the Polytechnic.

How we built it

Using the geospatial AR anchor capabilities of google. For the creation of the model itself, i have used Autodesk Maya and Adobe Substance Painter.

Challenges we ran into

While utilizing the most recent releases of Cesium and ARCore Extensions, the build process failed to complete even after several hours. However, upon reverting the ARCore Extensions to the recommended version, the build successfully executed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I teach the module AR/VR for games in Republic Polytechnic under the game design diploma. Since I am the module chair for the course, I recommended the 70+ students that i teach to participate in this challenge and many managed to join. That itself is an accomplishment.

Even though there are many AR creation tools, there aren't any with proper geospatial anchoring capabilities and i was excited to build my first geospatial AR experience with the help of google.

What we learned

Through my participation in this competition, I've learned extensively and aspire for others to envision the boundless possibilities of Augmented Reality. I believe in the future of AR and a big part of it is geospatial anchoring. I am glad that i learned how to do it.

What's next for The Alumni Family Tree

Ideally, it would be great if I could develop it as a web-based AR experience, eliminating the need for users to install an APK. I could then provide a QR link alongside the actual installation, allowing people to enjoy the full tree experience seamlessly. I would also like to make it interactive and add in animations to make it look as if its coming out of the actual installation.
