What it does
A route finder/trip planner. You just need to enter a destination and your source location and the app will automatically calculate all the available electric charging stations on the route. There is a map which will display all the available stations as markers and you can click on them for more information. There's also an added bonus of electric vehicle specific maintainence stations which will be returned. You can also find out(if you enter your own vehicle information) how much range you'll have left going to those charging stations.
How we built it
A lot of using google api's(I personally think they should rewrite it someday, very confusing to navigate) and react. Axios was used because I couldn't find any library that fit the project's requirements
Challenges we ran into
The api's. You would think they're easy. Just enter parameters and wait for a response. NOPE. Easily used up 3-4 hours just on testing, configuring, and manipulating data. Another big challenge was sleep. Honestly was operating on 3 hours of sleep the entire weekend...
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Just how much progress there is. There's a lot of gloom right now(for pretty obvious reasons). Being able to finish a projece like is enough of a milestone on its own for me to celebrate.
What we learned
If something isn't working, move on. If you keep dwelling on it, you might have a umm, 30% chance of solving it. However, 70% of the time, you're just wasting time AND not actually solving the problem. Also to have sugar on hand, great excuse to munch on snacks so that you can take breaks.
What's next for SkySurge
Making this route maker better! AI is incredibly useful and it'll be work if it can be implemented to dynamically calculate how much you need to spend on a trip(on charging), finding available maintainence stores(not all stores maintain electric vehicles), etc.
