How we built it

"Scan It!" is built for transparency, utilizing Google's Flutter framework to ensure a smooth experience across all devices and Gemini's powerful AI to find out complex ingredient information, providing clear explanations and flagging potential concerns, all within a single, user-friendly app.

Challenges we ran into

Our first hurdle was the Gemini API itself. It's like having a brilliant conversation partner, but one who speaks in a very specific language. The API requires data in a precise format and size to generate its insightful responses. We had to translate the messy world of ingredient lists, with their variations and abbreviations, into a language Gemini could understand. This involved building data cleaning pipelines and implementing validation checks to ensure smooth communication between the app and the AI.
