Inspiration
The urban planning track piqued our team's interest because it was unexpected and kind of came out of left field. As we learned more and more about the urban planning track through our research, we came to the surprising realization that the average citizen can only participate very little in the urban development process of their own communities, even though it has such significant impacts on their lives. As a result, we decided to build a platform that would democratize urban planning and empower everyone to influence the urban design in their communities.
What it does
We created Remap City, a platform that democratizes urban planning by making it easy for community members to participate and collaborate in the planning process. The platform is fully functional and live on the internet at link. Remap City consists of two parts, the map editor and the forum. On the map editor, the user searches the for the area they want to plan in the search bar and receive a current map of the area. On the side, there is a toolbar, where the user build their own development plan of the area by dragging and dropping to add buildings, parks, water features, roads, public transit, bike lanes, and walkways on the map. Once the user is finished, they can share their plan on the forum, where others can like, comment, and build off of it through the remap feature. Through the remap feature, the user can seamlessly load someone else’s plan into the map editor, where they are free to make all of the changes they want and republish them. Additionally, when users publish their plans, they are given a url that can be shared on conventional social media platforms as well.
How we built it
Front End: ReactJS, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Leaflet Back End: Firebase, Google Cloud, Nominatum Domain: GoDaddy Hosting: Vercel
Challenges we ran into
Some of our features were implemented with deprecated libraries, so we had to dive into thousands of lines of source code to update and modify them for our use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
React.city is a fully functional platform that can be used immediately to carry out its mission of empowering the average citizen to participate in the urban planning process.
What we learned
Leaflet integration, how to use iFrames
