Inspiration
As my first ever hackathon, I wanted to make a very clean and easy to use webpage. The Recycling Basics Center was created with that exact vision.
What it does
I wanted the user to move in a linear fashion, where the user builds off what was previously learned to go on to the next step. The user starts off with a small quiz, where the user gets a good idea of what will be learned and what is to come. After the quiz, the user is presented with some credible sources and articles from professionals where the user can read to gain understanding for recycling. Following the articles and credible sources, there is a small summary of what was learned in the articles, presented in the "Recycling Tips" box. Lastly, there is a "Daily Recycling Checklist" where the user can track their recycling for different parts of the day titled: "Morning", "Afternoon", and "Evening." There is also a "Bonus!" checklist where the user is able to do extra challenges to further improve our environment. All in all, the Recycling Basics center provides users with many tools to understand recycling and encourage users to recycle with the many tools the Recycling Basics Center provides.
How we built it
I built the Recycling Basics Center topic by topic where what is learned from one topic flows into the other topic or activity.
Challenges we ran into
I ran into challenges in the submission process since this is my very first hackathon. I also ran into challenges by trying to do too much with my project and trashing parts of the project that were rushed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am very proud of completing my first hackathon in general and I am also proud of the JavaScript that I had to learn to complete my quiz that I made. The clean look to the webpage with the earthy color scheme is also something that I am proud of.
What we learned
I had to relearn JavaScript in order to complete the small quiz. Overall I learned how much time larger projects take and how difficult projects are without a team.
What's next for Recycling Basics Center
I plan on updating the Recycling Basics Center weekly to make the page more professional and usable for the public. I will then host the webpage online at the end of June.
