Ventures abroad, while a phenomenal experience for the most part, can often hold discouraging setbacks when ordering food. With menus written in a foreign language, and difficulty communicating through language barriers, sometimes all we need is a simple translation app! MenuBite was our solution to this phenomenon, with the main functionality of translating a menu from one language to another. Based off of Flutter, we were able to incorporate the Google MLK Translator Kit alongside Image Picking technology to create an app that could take a picture of a menu, identify the language in the photo, and translate it to English. While we ran into multiple challenges incorporating the translation piece of this developmental software, we were ultimately able to combine these functions into the MenuBite app. We are especially proud of all the work we've put into this app, especially coming in knowing minimal Dart and the technicalities of Flutter! We've learned a lot about the app development process, and hope to continue adding functions to MenuBite (that especially incorporate the ideals of traveling). Some of these ideas range from adding a map (to add the locations of the restaurants a user has visited) to a favorites section, where users can revisit the translated menus they've scanned in the past, as well as a History section linked to a database which stores user's past scanned menus.
