Inspiration

My inspiration to create Lunchbell began when I read the headlines on the 'Bihar Mid-Day Meal Scheme Tragedy' which broke my heart. In this incident 23 students died, and dozens more fell ill at a primary school in the village of Gandaman in the Saran district of the Indian state of Bihar after eating a Mid-Day Meal contaminated with pesticide. Since then it was a big dream inside me to create something unique that never existed in the market especially for the poor so that I can prevent such massive deaths that occur due to lack of knowledge or inaccessibility to healthy veggies and fruits.

What it does

Lunchbell stands as a transformative force, that connects local poor and small farmers, rural schools and the whole nation to fight against food scarcity and food wastage. My platform provides the facility for farmers to sell their fresh surplus to schools and similarly for the people to donate any healthy and good to eat excess food that they have prepared in their home for the children. This way I am preventing food scarcity from entering our country's economy. To add some spice to it, I have implemented a special feature that helps the local school meal administers to calculate the accurate number of veggies needed to make a special dish for n-number of children.

How we built it

Lunchbell is powered by python in the back-end and I have used HTML for the framework, CSS for styling, Jinja for writing python codes in html pages and JavaScript for further work. Lunchbell's database has been build and managed with MySQL.

Challenges we ran into

Talking about challenges, the purchase part of Lunchbell for the schools to buy things at cheaper price from our market place was a little challenging. All over everything went smooth and fun.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very proud of accomplishing the task of building an amazing platform like Lunchbell! I feel both happy and great that I have built Lunchbell for the betterment of my society, school children and for India's economy. My project will remain as a memory dedicated for those little children who lost their lives in the Bihar tragedy.

What we learned

Working in this project got back my programming skills and developer mindset.

What's next for Lunchbell

With further funding and support from my community I can implement Lunchbell and train every rural schools and farmers on how to use and work with the platform so that we can ensure that no child suffers from malnutrition nor food poisoning and the famers surplus food does not wasted.
