Inspiration 🪄

On a quest for a standout product idea—one that could save users both time and money through a subscription-based model and address a real-world issue— we discovered Kindsettle.

What it does 🥁

Kindsettle is an innovative legal mediation platform tailored for co-parents. It facilitates the resolution of child support matters post-divorce, eliminating the need for court involvement, thus saving time and money.

How we built it 🧱

Our journey began at the Beeloud hackathon where we planned, designed, and developed Kindsettle.

We started our research by examining a range of existing services and tools. This included legal platforms such as GovLink for Child Support Programs, FairClaims, LegalZoom, and RocketLawyer; child support management tools like DComply, SupportPay, coParenter and OurFamilyWizard; traditional child support lawyers and agency websites. Additionally, we looked at Skycop.com for state-of-the-art claims management platform inspiration.

From this research, we crafted detailed implementation specifications and wireframes which were then transformed into designs. For development, we used technologies like React.js, Node.js, and Couchbase. Transaction management was facilitated through Stripe Payments, Connect, and Payouts.

Challenges we ran into 🏃‍♂️💨

Navigating the complex legal landscape initially proved challenging. However, consultations with legal experts and online resources enabled us to create a compliant and dependable child support calculator.

Enhancing the user experience with high-quality features required meticulous planning and execution. We utilized a hero scoping strategy, which enabled us to launch the website promptly.

Recruiting users was challenging due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 👏

  • We successfully developed and soft-launched the platform.
  • We implemented guerrilla marketing tactics and Google Ads campaigns, achieving over 700 impressions on Google Search.
  • Kindsettle.com has received over 100 visits, with one registered user so far. We've engaged with lawyers, users, and mentors, and have mapped out future directions for the project.
  • Jonas, a co-parent from Santa Monica, California, signed up to the platform to verify if the amount of child support he mutually agreed to pay aligns with regulations and market standards - he learned that currently he is paying more than the State of California requires.
  • We created potential business model and revenue streams projections based on the user growth. In addition, we have produced estimates of investment needed for a full platform development and go-to-market.
  • Finally, we really enjoyed the entire experience!

What we learned 📚

  • Our team cohesion was instrumental in producing high-quality designs and product.
  • Many co-parents are unaware of legal mediation services and often resort to costly court proceedings.
  • We learned about the benefits of CouchDB and how Stripe Marketplaces can provide essential payments infrastructure.
  • We gained insights into specific issues in the field and broader market dynamics.
  • We acquired knowledge on running Google Ads campaigns for child support services.

What's next for Kindsettle 🔮

We envision Kindsettle as the pioneering online platform for mutual legal mediation. Our immediate goal is to secure initial sales and validate the concept. Future plans involve refining the product and expanding our services to cover additional legal issues like divorce settlements, small claims, and landlord-tenant disputes. We are excited to lead the way as the first AI-driven mediation platform.
