Inspiration

Preparing for the IELTS English exam is hard. And probably the hardest part is the Writing section. Lastly, I was preparing for it and realized how helpful using an LLM is as your IELTS instructor.

What it does

My app has two functionalities:

  1. Generate a random task for the IELTS Writing exam (both Part 1 and Part 2)
  2. Evaluate your answer to the task with band score, feedback, and an improved version of your answer.

How we built it

I built it using the Streamlit app and the new open-source LLM model Arctic by Snowflake.

Challenges we ran into

I was tight on schedule, as I knew about the hackathon quite late. So, the main challenge was building a fully working app that I would use myself before the deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The app is up and running!

What we learned

The beauty and ease of building handy apps with Streamlit. The Replicate service's convenience unlocks so many open-source models, so I will now consider Replicate for my projects. Arctic LLM is quite performant and provides very relevant output.

What's next for IELTS Writing Arctic Assistant

Improve prompts so the feedback will be more helpful. Adding support of the IELTS academic.
