Inspiration

Guardian Orb is inspired by iconic characters like Doctor Strange and the Avengers, drawing from the concept of wielding mystical artifacts and cosmic powers. The idea is rooted in the notion of controlling supernatural abilities, specifically manifested through a magical orb to combat alien invaders threatening Earth.

What it does

Guardian Orb is a mixed reality (MR) game designed to leverage virtual reality (VR) technology, albeit with constraints due to hardware limitations like the Oculus Quest 2. In this game, players interact with a mystical orb to unleash mystical powers against invading alien spacecraft. By tapping the orb, players can summon a giant spectral hand to battle extraterrestrial foes.

How we built it

Guardian Orb was built using Unity and harnesses VR capabilities, primarily targeting the Oculus Quest 2 platform. The game combines MR elements, albeit with challenges due to hardware limitations. The core mechanics involve interacting with the VR environment using hand controllers, specifically to activate the power of the orb and engage in combat.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Hardware Limitations: Working with the capabilities of the Oculus Quest 2 posed challenges in implementing robust mixed reality features.

  2. Recording Issues: Capturing MR gameplay accurately, especially color accuracy, proved difficult due to technical constraints. when I run on a vr device it can appear black and white. but when recorded and viewed the results appear dark

  3. Gameplay Design: Balancing an immersive VR experience with engaging gameplay mechanics, like summoning and controlling mystical powers, required iterative design and testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Innovative Concept: Developing a unique concept that blends superhero-inspired themes with immersive VR gameplay.

  2. Technical Execution: Overcoming hardware constraints to deliver a functional mixed reality experience within VR limitations.

  3. Engaging Gameplay: Creating an interactive and enjoyable gameplay loop centered around using magical abilities to protect Earth.

What we learned

  1. VR Development: Gaining deeper insights into VR development, including optimizing experiences for specific VR platforms.

  2. MR Challenges: Understanding the complexities of integrating mixed reality elements into VR games with existing hardware.

  3. User Experience: Learning valuable lessons about designing immersive and intuitive user experiences within the VR context.

What's next for Guardian Orb

  1. Improved Mixed Reality: Continuously refining mixed reality features to enhance visual accuracy and recording capabilities.

  2. Gameplay Expansion: Adding depth to gameplay mechanics, such as introducing new powers and enemy types, to increase player engagement.

  3. Platform Expansion: Exploring opportunities to bring Guardian Orb to additional VR platforms and devices, leveraging advancements in VR technology.

Our Hopes

We hope that Guardian Orb achieves a top ranking in this competition, allowing us to obtain a prize that will be used to purchase the Oculus Quest 3 device. With this device, we intend to further contribute to VR technology development in Indonesia, delivering more advanced mixed reality experiences and supporting the overall growth of the VR industry. Through Guardian Orb, we aim to drive innovation and creativity in the local VR landscape.
