Inspiration

For over four years, my grandmother has been contending with dementia. Like many, she desired to age in the familiarity of her own home. However, living alone posed challenges in providing her with adequate assistance. To ensure her safety, I was entrusted with installing multiple Blink cameras throughout her residence for monitoring purposes. Despite the considerable effort and expense involved in setting up these cameras and subscribing to the costly monthly service, we found ourselves lacking the necessary notifications for her well-being. This proved particularly perplexing for my parents, who are in their sixties. While the cameras served their purpose to some extent, there was much left to be desired in terms of usability and effectiveness."

What it does

Therefore we set out to build a monitoring system that provides the ensurance that families in dementia care could benefit from. In addition to motion detection, Glance detects falls, detects social connections and behabvioral patterns. On top of that , it is easy to use and does not require special devices. It's a BYOD (Bring your on Device- with camera)

How we built it

Our tech stack needed to be flexible to work amonmg various devices, therefore, we are using Firebase as our BackEnd with VueJS and Flutter on the front. We plan on being accessible to many people.

Challenges we ran into

We encountered numerous challenges, primarily stemming from our intense effort to meet tight deadlines. Savalas, new to Flutter, had to rapidly acquire proficiency. We faced issues with camera functionality on devices versus the web, as well as package compatibility issues between the two platforms.

Simplifying the user experience proved challenging; we aimed for familiarity with existing devices while introducing a fresh feel, resulting in numerous revisions. As we honed our focus, we encountered difficulties in narrowing down our scope, necessitating the removal of extraneous elements.

However, we remain committed to enhancing our product, with plans to introduce exciting new features in the future. Over the past week, we've received valuable user feedback from families coping with dementia.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Simplifying our design (We initially started with everything packed in) and that we have a POC we can build upon.

That our concept of capturing "dementia moments" via AI works!!! We have a lot more testing to do, however it is promising. That we can offer an affordable solution- to an extent. We do find that the videos take up a lot of space and AI prices can add up. We are looking at ways of making at cutting costs on that end.

What we learned

Primarily, following discussions with associates (Sabrina, Rob, Seb, etc.), there is a significant demand for the app. These individuals have previously been quite discerning, making their interest a positive indicator. Our experience with Flutter was intensive, marked by numerous challenges, yet highly instructive. Furthermore, our journey has afforded us invaluable insights into the intricate needs of dementia care.

What's next for Glance

  1. Continued Refinement: We will persist in refining and polishing the app, ensuring it meets the highest standards of usability and functionality.

  2. Integration of ChatGPT4o: Our upcoming focus is on integrating the new ChatGPT4o feature, enabling users to interact with the device in innovative ways.

  3. Advancement of AI Capabilities: We are dedicated to advancing our AI capabilities to the next level, expanding our current seven levels of AI within the app.

  4. Thorough Testing: Testing remains a priority as we rigorously assess the app's performance and address any issues that may arise.

  5. Engagement with Local Agencies: We will continue engaging with local agencies such as the Area Agency on Aging (NEGRC), exploring potential collaborations and volunteer opportunities.

  6. Pilot Program Implementation: Upon successful validation, we plan to initiate a pilot program where we collect and configure phones for individuals who can benefit from Glance, thereby further demonstrating its effectiveness and utility.

  7. App Store Deployment: Finally, we will prepare and submit Glance for release on the App Stores, ensuring it is readily accessible to users worldwide.

These steps are crucial as we strive to enhance Glance and make it an invaluable tool for caregivers and families.

Over the weekend, we’ve made significant enhancements to Glance and introduced new features. To keep these updates separate from the Hackathon version, we’ve created a new link: https://getglance.web.app.

Feel free to join, create an account, and let us know if you’re testing it. You can use the app until we run out of AI credits :)

Today, we tested the app in a large building after church, and the AI performed well.

New Features:

  • Updated Thumbnail Generation
  • Improved Dementia Care Scenarios on the Camera Tab
  • Enhanced AI Agent Response
  • Detail View Cleanup (We’re still working on a better design!)

If you have an Android device and are interested in testing Glance, please let us know. Note that a few features will only be available on the device.
