Bison Buddy - AI Chatbot

An AI-powered chatbot to give prospective CEA students information on the College, their major, and other common parts of the application process.

Inspiration

We wanted to provide prospective students with a better way to navigate the information that we also looked for when considering Howard University.

What it does

The user types in a question relating to current information on the College of Engineering and Architecture and the bot will return a response with the relevant information that has been run through a NLP, and every piece of data will come with a citation to show where the user can find more information.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Limited Experience: This project exposed us to a lot of common and popular tools that programmers and developers use daily (GitHub, Microsoft Azure services, and languages like TypeScript and HTML/CSS). We dedicated a lot of time to researching and learning new terminology through attending workshops, utilizing YouTube, and even Microsoft Learn, so we could build and explain our project.

2: Debugging: We experienced technical issues while trying to run our project. Ensuring that our ChatBot did not provide the user with incorrect information or hallucination required a lot of diligent troubleshooting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Successfully being able to run and have a visually appealing project to present to judges, along with being able to present a live demo of our chatbot.
  2. Creating a stronger foundation of how the AI and machine learning process works, and strengthening our skills in Python and Linux.
  3. Providing a product that gave a solution to a common issue among Howard students.
